NASOH promotes the exchange of information among its members and others interested in the history of the seas, lakes, and inland waterways; calls attention to books, articles, and documents pertinent to naval and maritime history; and works with local, regional, national, international, and government organizations toward the goal of fostering a more general awareness and appreciation for North America's naval and maritime heritage.

NASOH is a non-profit, educational organization with elected officers. Society members, from North America and overseas, include university professors, teachers, government historians, naval architects, marine surveyors, underwater archaeologists, documentary editors, archivists, librarians, museum curators, members of the military, students, and individuals from many walks of life who share a common enthusiasm for the history of the seas and inland waters. There are NASOH members in England, France, Australia, and Bermuda. This great diversity of membership defines the society's character and marks it as truly unique among scholarly organizations.
